WMM Flashcards
(8 cards)
Who made the WMM
Baddeley and Hitch
What is the central executive
-A suspensory role that monitors and allocates data (sense data or LTM data) to the slave systems
-It’s also used in mental arithmetics and problem solving
-Limited capacity as it cannot attend to many things at once, no storage
-Codes modality free (dependant on the sense)
What is the visual spatial sketchpad (VSS)
-Is used for dealing with visual / spatial tasks.
-The visual data either goes to the visual cache or the inner scribe
-The visual cache stores the visual data
-The inner scribe provides a rehearsal mechanism by recording the arrangement of the visual field
- Capacity of 3-4 objects
- Codes in visual information
What is the phonological loop
- It processes auditory information
-The information either goes through the phonological store or the articulatory process
-Phonological store stores speech for brief periods
-Articulatory process is a verbal rehearsal of speech in the mind
-Capacity of 2 sec
-Codes acoustically
What is the episodic buffer
Added in the 2000’s by Baddeley
-It’s the temporary store for information received by the central executive
-It integrates info from all 3 slave systems to make episodes
-Transfers the information into the LTM
-Capacity is 4 chunks
-Coding is modality free
Supporting research for phonological loop / visual spatial sketchpad
Baddeley
-Participants had more difficulty doing a visual and verbal task eg. Tracking a light and describing the letter F. Than doing just a visual task
-Competing slave systems
Lack of clarity in the formation of the model
-Baddeley discovers the CE in 2000 stating it’s the most important but least understood
-Suggests the theory lacks research and in misunderstood
Clinical support
-KF has a bad STM ability for verbal info but can process visual info normally
-Supports vss and phonological l as separate unitary stores
