LTM Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the 3 types of LTM
Episodic memory
Procedural memory
Semantic memory
Episodic memory is
-our ability to recall events from our lives including the memory of when it happened, the people and the objects
-memories from this store are retrieved consciously
-least resistant to forgetting
Procedural memory is
The memory store for our knowledge of actions and skills
-we recall these without conscious awareness or deliberate effort
-most resistant to forgetting
Semantic memory is
-knowledge of the world including facts and knowledge of words and concepts
-recalled deliberately with conscious effort
Supporting case study
-Clive Wearing
-Can’t remember day to day events
-Can play the piano
-Knows what a dog is
Supporting neuroimaging evidence
Tulving
-Episodic memory-left prefrontal cortex
-Semantic and procedural memory-right prefrontal cortex
-Supports them as separate unitary stores
Practical application
-Researchers creating interventions to improve the episodic recall of elders
-Educate on episodic being least resistant to forgetting
-Treat/Manage loss of cognitive abilities in elder patients
Contradicting research
-Researchers suggest that there are actually 2 stores
-Declarative-episodic and semantic
-non-declarative-procedural
-Contradicts the idea of 3 way division of memory
Extra PEELs
Case studies can’t be generalized
