Achievement motivation - paper 2 Flashcards
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY (11 cards)
what is achievement motivation?
the desire of athletes to continue and aiming to succeed even when failure strikes
what is atkinson’s model
combining personality components of achievement motivation “need to achieve” and “need to avoid failure”
equation:
achievement = a drive to + fear of
motivation succeed failure
what are the characteristics of NACH (need to achieve)
- willing to take on challenges
- welcomes feedback
- very determined
- approach behaviour
- confidence
- internal attribution
- high levels of task persistence
what are the characteristics of NAF (need to avoid failure)
- unwilling to take on challenges
- not open to feedback
- very determined
- experiences learnt helplessness
- doesn’t enjoy responsibility
- attributes success to external factors and failure to internal factors
what is approach behaviour?
to be motivated to try and complete very difficult tasks without being afraid to fail
4 strategies to promote approach behaviour
- educating athlete that its okay to fail
- encouraging athlete to take on new challenges
- attribution training
- regularly assessing performance
what is attribution training?
ensuring the athlete is aware of how they should attribute their success and failure
e.g. converting all failures and successes to internal (unstable) rather than external (stable) factors
the situational component can be separated into 2 parts…
- INICIATIVE VALUE
intrinsic value that the performer attributes to completing a task successfully - PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS
how likely a performer is to succeed in their performance
what are the 2 types of goals in achievement goal theory?
- OUTCOME ORIENTATED GOALS
comparison of their performance to others, such as teammates or opponents - TASK ORIENTADED GOALS
comparison with their current performance and with their past performances, e.g. from the previous season/game
characteristics of athlete with ‘outcome orientated goals’
- can affect their meaning of success as well as perceived ability
- tend to not persist with difficult tasks
- they perceive their ability to be high when they beat others and low when they loose
characteristics of athlete with ‘task orientated goals’
- view of success bu judging their performance to pervious performances
- not afraid to fail
- have high but reasonable personal performance standards
