Acids, Alkalis And Bases Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the pH scale used for?
The pH scale is used to tell how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
What is the ph of an acidic solution?
Below 7
The lower the pH, the more acidic it is.
What is the pH of an alkaline solution
above 7
The higher the pH, the more alkaline it is.
What are the colours of a pH scale
Acids - red, orange, yellow
Neutral - green
Alkali - blue, purple
How can u measure the pH oh a solution
Using an indicator
A dye that changes colour depending on weather it’s above or below a certain pH
What is a base?
A substance that will neutralise an acid
For example, metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates and ammonia.
How can you make an alkaline solution
By dissolving a soluble base in water
Soluble bases are known as alkalis.
How can you make an acidic solution
By dissolving a soluble non-metal oxide in water
