Alcohols Flashcards
(10 cards)
What’s the name of the alcohol functional group?
Hydroxy functional group –OH
What is the general formula for an alcohol?
CnH2n+1OH
What are two uses of alcohols?
- solvents
- Fuels
Why are alcohols good fuels?
Because of their high flammability and because they burn with very clean flames
Why are alcohols good solvents?
Because they can dissolve most things, e.g. hydrocarbons, oils and fats.
What is produced when alcohols undergo complete combustion in the air?
Methanol + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water vapour
Methanol, ethanol and propanol are all miscible with water, what does this mean ?
They can be mixed with water to make a solution
From butanol onwards what happens to the solubility of alcohol in water
It decreases as the molecules gets larger
What happens to the melting and boiling point of alcohol as the size of alcohol increases
The melting and boiling point also increases {this is because as the molecules get bigger, the intermolecular forces between them get stronger}
What’s the ending for an alcohol?
-ol
