Acids, Bases And Salts Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a base?
Any substance with a PH greater than 7
What is an acid?
Any substance that forms an aqueous solution with a PH below 7
What is an alkaline?
A base that dissolves in water forming a substance with a PH greater than 7
What ions do alkaline form in water?
OH-
What ions do acids form?
H+
What is the reaction between an acid and a base called? And what does it create?
Neutralisation reaction
Creates salt and water
What is the chemical formulae for sodium hydroxide? And is it an acid or a base?
NaOH
Base
What is the chemical formula for calcium carbonate? And is it an acid or a base?
CaCO3
Base
What type of metals can also be used in neutralising reactions?
Metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonate
What is produced when reacting acid and metal carbonate?
Salt, water and carbon dioxide
How do you make soluble salts using metals?
- gently heat dilute acid
- keep adding insoluble base (little bit at a time)
- eventually base will stop dissolving (in excess meaning the rest of the solution is neutralised)
- filter out excess (what is left is a dissolved form of soluble salt
- to make into salt crystals heat in a water bath until crystals form
What is an example of an insoluble base?
Metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonate
Why is it important to use an excess of the other reactant to neutralise an acid?
To ensure all the acid is used up (acid is a limiting reactant)
What is a strong acid?
Completely ionises in aqueous solution
What does ionising mean?
Produces hydrogen ions
When do acids become ionising?
When in contact with water
