Bonnding + Structure Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an ion, cation and anion?
Ion - electrically charged atom created by loss or gain of electrons
Cation - positive ion
Anion - negative ions
Why are giant ionic lattices strong?
- many electrostatic forces between particles acting in all directions
What determines if a covalent bond is single, double or triple?
The amount of electrons that are shared, every 2 electrons shared = 1 line between atoms
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms covalently bonded together (can be same or different element)
What are non bonding electrons?
Electrons that are not shared in a covalent bond
What are the properties of of graphine?
- flexible
- conducts heat + electricity
- strong
- light
What are the properties of diamond?
- doesn’t conduct electricity
- hard
- dense
- high melting point
What are the limitations of dot and cross diagrams?
- not to correct size of atom
- not 3D
What are the limitations of ball and stick diagrams?
- doesn’t indicate movement of electrons
- gaps between atoms are much smaller
What type of bonds do polymers use?
Covalent
How do the layers not slide over each other in alloys?
Different sized atoms for different metals mean layers cant slide
