-Hamlet and horatio accompany marcellus on his watch - hear revelry within the castle - hamlet suggests the king is drinking and partying again - caludius behaviour gives denmark a bad reputation
- ghost appears - begs ghost to speak - follows the ghost - devotion to father even in death (link to act 3 scene 4 as his mother cant see the ghost - its hamlets delusion)
- depth of hamlets sadness - thinks life had no value (malcontent/ fatalistic) theme of madness
- ‘somthing is rotten in the state of denmark’
