Act 5 Scene 2 Flashcards
Julia dies, Bosola going to betray cardinal (11 cards)
What does the Doctor say has happened to Ferdinand?
“Such melancholy humour they imagine themselves to be transformed into wolves”
How can we see the way Ferdinand acts?
In the RSC version, he storms in, scratching. “[throws himself on the ground]” and singing. He hisses and whimpers and screams. He [attacks the doctor]”
How can we see the Cardinal’s machiavellian nature?
“[aside] So! This fellow must not know by any means I had intelligence in our Duchess’s death, for - though I counselled it - The full of all th’ engagement seemed to grow from Ferdinand - Now, sir, how fares our sister?”
When Julia first comes in, what is she eating (in the RSC version) and the second time, what is she holding?
She’s eating apricots, and in the second, she [enters with a pistol]
How does Julia flirt with Bosola?
“Which of my women ‘twas you hired to put love powder into my drink?… why should I fall in love with such a face else?”
How does Julia use the metaphor of the diamonds to tell Bosola to not worry about the Cardinal if he indulges with Julia?
“For if I see and steal a diamond the fault is not i’th’ stone, but in me the thief that purloins it.”
How does Julia fulfill the task that Bosola has for her to investigate the Cardinal?
“Will you do this?” “Cunningly” “Tomorrow I’ll expect the intelligence.” “Tomorrow? Get you into my cabinet. You shall have it with you… You shall see me wind my tongue about his heart like a skein of milk”]
Does the Cardinal confess to Julia? Why?
“No more! Thou shalt know it - by my appointment, the great Duchess of Malfi and two of her young children, four nights since, were strangled” - mirrors the confession ceremony (roles reversed).
How does the Cardinal kill Julia?
He makes her “swear… upon this book” (the Bible) and “thou’rt poisoned with that book”
How is Julia blamed for this?
“Couldst thou not have poisoned him?”
What does Bosola agree to with the Cardinal? What is he actually going to do instead?
“Thou wilt kill Antonio?
“Yes.”
…
“I’ll join with thee in a most just revenge: the weakest arm is strong enough that strikes with the sword of justice”
