What is leisure?
How you spend your free time, when you can do as you please.
It can be active such as walking or playing a sport.
It can be passive such as reading or watching tv.
Reasons why people have more leisure time in the modern world
Shorter working hours and more opportunities to work part time or job share.
Unemployment.
People retiring earlier and taking longer holidays.
Increased life expectancy.
What are the three types of organisations in the active leisure industry?
Private sector
Public sector
Voluntary sector
What is the private sector?
Leisure organisations run by individuals and private companies with the aim of making a profit.
Privately owned and funded.
The government do not own or control these private enterprises.
What is the public sector?
Funded and controlled by the government.
Non profit making.
Provide services for public use such as local leisure centres.
What is the voluntary sector?
Non profit organisations who rely on membership fees and fundraising.
Non owned by a business or government controlled.
Often charities.
Focus on getting people to participate and achieve.
Normally run and managed by volunteers.
What are the different categories in the active leisure industry?
Arts and entertainment - museums and cinemas.
Catering - pubs, bars and restaurants.
Home based leisure - libraries and computer gaming - passive leisure.
Sport and physical recreation - leisure centres and sports clubs.
Hospitality - hotels and campsites.
What does sport NI do?
Vision - lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity will deliver an active, healthy, resilient and inclusive society.
What they provide - funding for national governing bodies of sport and other organisations.
Managed by - non-departmental public body and is sponsored by the department for communities.
What do Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council do?
Vision - to achieve better lives for the people who work, live in or visit the LCCC area.
Provide - community support and leisure facilities.
Managed by - government.
What do disability sport NI do?
Vision - to develop sports which give disabled people an equal opportunity to live a full, active & healthy lifestyle.
Provide - training and courses, advice, sports facilities access and events.
Managed by - a board of directors.
What factors need to be considered by active leisure organisations when catering for customers?
Accessibility - must be easy to get to, especially if out of town, good roads and public transport.
Facility quality - need to be clean and high quality.
Range of activities on offer.
Coaching quality.
What qualifications and responsibilities do you need to be a lifeguard or sports psychologist?
Lifeguard - Q - natural pool lifeguard qualification, practical assessment. R - supervising, spotting hazards.
Sports psychologist - Q - degree in physiotherapy. R - examine or diagnose injuries, plan treatments, massage.
