Active Transport Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of particles from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration, against their concentration gradient. It requires energy from respiration.
How do root hairs utilize active transport?
Root hairs take up water and mineral ions from the soil, which are usually in higher concentrations in the cells, requiring energy from respiration to work.
What substances are moved in the gut via active transport?
Substances such as glucose and amino acids from food are moved from the gut into the bloodstream, sometimes against a concentration gradient.
Why is active transport necessary in the gut?
Active transport is required to move sugar to the blood when there is a lower concentration of sugar molecules in the gut than in the blood.
