What is the pathophysiology of Alcohol Withdrawal

A
  1. Chronic use desensitises normal neuronal receptors
  2. Down regulation of GABA receptors and up regulation of NMDA receptors
  3. Sudden cessation of alcohol
  4. Over active NMDA receptors
  5. Inadequate inhibition from GABA
  6. Increased autonomic overactivity
  7. Increase catecholamines
  8. Tachycardia, hypertension, tremors, seizures, Delirium tremens
  9. Aspiration, Myocardial infarction, stroke, electrolyte imbalance
  10. Death
