ADDICTION ( Explanations for gambling addiction) Flashcards
(4 cards)
Outline operant conditioning (Reinforcement) as an explanation of gambling
Gambling behaviour is positively reinforced by the reward of winning money , even if wins are infrequent
Negative reinforcement also occurs : gambling may be used as an escape to stress , anxiety or boredom.
Outline classical conditioning (Cue-reactivity ) as an explanation of gambling
Gambling becomes associated with external cues , like : the sounds and lights of a casino , the look of betting websites . These cues are conditioned stimuli ( CS) that trigger cravings or excitement , even without the actual gambling.
Outline Social learning theory (SLT ) as an explanation of gambling
Gambling may be learned indirectly by observing role models ( parents , peers ) who gamble and are rewarded ( eg. winning money). If the observer identifies with the role model and sees positive outcomes , they may imitate gambling behaviour
