MEMORY ( MSM) Flashcards
(8 cards)
Identify the different stores in the MSM
the sensory memory , short term memory and long term memory
How is information transferred to STM from the Sensory Memory
by paying attention
How is information transferred to LTM from the STM
by maintenance rehearsal
How is information transferred to STM from the LTM
by retrieval
Outline the features of Sensory memory ( Capacity , Duration , Coding )
Capacity - huge
Duration - 250M
Coding - depends on organ
Outline the features of Short term Memory ( Capacity , Duration , Coding )
Capacity - 7+/-2
Duration - 18secs
Coding - acoustic
Outline the features of Long term Memory ( Capacity , Duration , Coding )
Capacity - unlimited
Duration - 2 mins-100 yrs
Coding - semantic
Evaluate the MSM
STRENGTHS :
Brain studies : HM after surgery to remove the hippocampus from both sides in order to reduce epilepsy . He could not form new LTM but had intact STM supporting the separation of STM and LTM as HM could not transfer information from his STM to LTM.
LIMITATIONS
Oversimplification : MSM treats the STM and LTM as unitary stores , but evidence suggests they’re more complex . Patient KF had poor STM for verbal info but good visual info, showing that STM isn’t a single store.
Rehearsal isn’t the only way to transfer to LTM . According to MSM , rehearsal is the key to transferring information from STM to LTM however researchers argue that depth of processing matters more than repetition , information processed semantically goes to LTM without rehearsal
