SMS. The ISM code defines that the company must define this. This may come from the primary legislation from that flag state.

What are your responsibilities as master
- Ensure the safety of all cargo, crew and the vessel
- has final authority to control the ship and maintain discipline of all on board
- Responsible for compliance of all relevant MTA regs and maritime rules
Will be defined in SMS. - following ISM, crew responsibilities, signage responsibilities, review/audits, crew motivation, training/drills

What is the cargo safety construction certificate?
The structure, machinery and equipment of the ship , other than items included in the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate and a Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate.
Required under SOLAS.
Requires initial survey and renewal survey every year, intermediate survey on the 2-3year anniversary and a full survey every 5 years.
Is there an alternative to the SCC, SEC, and CRC?
YES, A Cargo Ship Safety Certificate (CSSC), is issued as an alternative to separate Cargo Ship Safety Construction, Cargo Ship Safety Equipment and Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificates. This includes provisions for recording all the surveys required for the Cargo Ship Safety Construction, Safety Equipment and Safety Radio on the single combined Certificate.
Who does MLC apply to?
Any commercial ship engaged on international voyages.
Vessels under 500GT (or over 200GT domestically) do not need an mlc certificate however still need to operate to MLC standards

Meet management, read and sign official documents and Receive LOA.
Documentation before hand to read over, if not, i expect adequate time to read over and ask questions on the documents
Communication with vessel prior to boarding
Expect induction vessel, meet gangway watch, have ID checked and all ongoing operations
Carry out vessel and systems inspection
Methodically go through all required documentation.
Don’t sign over command until all is ok - note any deficiencies
Want to be able to ask questions for clarification
Want to go over the employment contract and any conditions of such. As well as additional SEA.
Personal indemnity insurance and health / medical insurance
Civil protection from charter guests?
Gain an understanding of crew employment agreements and ports of repatriation, learning about crew

What is the role of a classification society
They set and look after the technical, structural and mechanical components of the compliance of the vessel, completing anual and 5 yearly audits to ensure the vessel remains compliant. They are often employed on behalf of the flag state to ensure the vessel remains up to the standards set out. Eg Lloyds, AB, BV.
What are some of the recording requirements on board
GRB, ORB, OLB, GMDSS log, deck/engine logs.
