US, UK, 15 countries attack Afghanistan, seize land - ISAF, UN peacekeepers
What was the mission of the countries who intervened in Afghanistan in 2001?
Education, democracy, rule of law, gender equality, train and equip Afghan govt
When did the USA withdraw?
2021 - made deal with Taliban to remove all US troops if they do not attack US and allies
Taliban captures Afghan govt territory
What happened when Taliban took over in 2021?
Human rights violations
Afghan govt currency in overseas banks frozen
Funding + aid reduced
Humanitarian crisis continues
What was the cost of military intervention in Afghanistan?
Deaths of 175,000 innocent civilians
Damage to housing and infrastructure
People displaced

What were the ST gains?
Girls education reestablished
Democratic institutions + greater free speech
Improvement to LE, literacy and gender equality
What were the LT costs?
Lengthened overall conflict
Why were some Afghans not on board with intervention?
Some felt that conflict meant more civilians were dying unnecessarily, if Taliban were in power conflict would reduce alongside civilian casualties
Either way there were human rights violations - which ones were worse? Innocent civilians dying? Strict Muslim laws?
