3 tests when CPS decide whether to prosecute
- Evidential test - decide whether evidence is admissible
- Public interest test - whether it is in public interest
- Threshold test - reasonable grounds to believe their guilty
- offence is serious enough to justify immediate charging.

- in crown court, judge must manage the trial. Summing up evidence and passing the sentence
- in the court of appeal, judges make rulings on appeal that come from lower courts in the hierarchy.

- based off an independent body.
- in 2018, most senior judge received £257,000 and lowest rank judges got paid £110,000.
