Name four theories of aggression
Instinct theory
The frustration- aggression hypothesis
Aggressive cue hypothesis
Social learning theory
Describe Instinct theory
Instinct Theory is an evolutionary theory which suggests that all performers are born with an aggressive instinct that will surface with enough provocation. Which can mean that our aggressive instincts surface more often in sporting situations.
Describe the frustration-aggression hypothesis
A goal is blocked
Performer becomes frustrated
Aggression occurs as a way of trying to overcome the frustration
If Goal is now achieved - catharsis
If goal remains blocked it can lead to more frustration / aggression
Describe aggressive cue hypothesis
Suggests that increased frustration will lead to increased arousal levels and a drive towards aggressive responses. Aggression will only occur if certain ‘ learned cues’ are present in the environment
