Aims, Hypotheses, Variables Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is an Aim?
What you are hoping to find out
IV?
Variable the researcher manipulates to have an effect on the DV
DV?
Thing that is being measured
What is operationalising
How you will define and measure a specific variable as it is used in your study
What is an experimental hypothesis
A prediction of what will happen “there will be a difference between…”
What is a Null hypothesis?
A prediction that nothing will happen: “there will be no difference between…”
What is a one tailed/ directional hypothesis
A hypothesis that predicts the direction of the results eg “women will be better than men”
What is a two-tailed/ non-directional hypothesis?
A hypothesis that doesn’t predict the direction things will go in “there will be a different between men and women”
What is an extraneous variable
Variables that if not controlled may affect the DV and provide a false impression that an IV has produced change when it hasn’t
What is a confounding variable
An extraneous variable that has affected the IV so we cannot be sure of the true source of the change to the DV
