Experimental Design Flashcards
(8 cards)
Independent groups definition and pros and cons
- when you have different people in each condition
- good because demand characteristics and order effects are less of a problem
- bad because participant variables can be a problem
Repeated measures definition and pros and cons
- when you have the same people in both conditions
- good cause participant variables are better controlled
- bad cause demand characteristics and order effects may be a problem (but can be controlled through counterbalancing)
Matched pairs definition and pros and cons
- when you have different but similar participants in each condition
- good cause demand characteristics and order effects are less of a problem. Participant variables are better controlled
- bad cause no two participants can ever be perfectly matched so there may be some participant variables
What are demand characteristics
When the participants tries to give the answer/result they think the experimenter is looking for
What are order effects
When the positioning of tasks influences the outcome in a repeated measure design
What are participant variables
Something about the participants background that could affect the result of the experiment
What is counter balancing
A way to control order effects in a repeated measured design; when you do the conditions in a differennt order for half the people
How is it decided which participants will go in which condition?
Random allocation
