You receive a flight request that takes you greater than 100NM from you base. What information must you attain prior to accepting this flight?
FAR 91.103
For an IFR flight, or any not in the vicinity of an airport
- weather reports and forecasts
- fuel requirements
- alternatives available if the planned flight cannot be completed
- any known traffic delays of which the pilot in command has been advised by ATC;
For any flight
- runway lengths at airports of intended use, and takeoff and landing distance from the RFM
Why and how might you deviate from an accepted ATC clearance?
91.123
- amended clearance is obtained
- an emergency exists
- in response to a traffic alert and collision avoidance system resolution advisory
Your flight route takes you over an MLB stadium while a game is in play. What type of restricted airspace exists? Can you fly through on a PR flight? A patient flight?
91.145
TFR - over a stadium with a seat capacity of 30k or more, from 1hr before the start of scheduled event to 1 hr after end of event, 3NM up to and including 3,000ft
- except in accordance with the authorizations, terms, and conditions of the temporary flight restriction published in the NOTAM
- When warranted, the FAA Administrator may exclude the following flights from the provisions of this section:
(2) Medical and rescue.
What about flying over a stadium with a game in play that is not one of the specific major sporting events?
Where would you find the details?
91.145
- The dimensions of the TFR will vary depending on the size of the event. The TFR will normally be limited to a 3 NM radius from the center of the event, up to 2,500 feet above the surface (converted to MSL), but will not be greater than the minimum airspace necessary for the management of aircraft operations in the vicinity of the specified area.
- NOTAMS, FAA website (with disclaimer), FSS (from FAA data)
During preflight you notice the Airworthiness Cert is faded, torn or unreadable. What do you do? Can you fly?
FAR 91.203
- no person may operate a civil aircraft unless it has within it the following: (1) An appropriate and current airworthiness certificate.
- No person may operate a civil aircraft unless the airworthiness certificate is displayed at the cabin or cockpit entrance so that it is legible to passengers or crew.
HOWEVER.
A005 contains an Exemption #10741E providing for the continued operation of the aircraft through an appropriate entry in the logbook when the airworthiness cert or reg very is lost, stolen, or mutilated. Only within the lower 48.
What happens if you refuse a drug/alcohol test?
FAR 63.12
- Denial of an application for any certificate or rating issued under this part for a period of up to 1 year after the date of that refusal; or
- Suspension or revocation of any certificate or rating issued under this part.
GOM Ch6
Air Methods is a zero tolerance company.
Alcohol testing req for maintenance personnel.
Air Methods Anti-drug training Manual pg 8
All employees who perform safety sensitive functions are required to be a part of the D&A testing program.
You have found yourself the cause, victim, or performer of a safety sensitive function resulting in a mishap involving an aircraft. What are the restrictions for consuming alcohol following the mishap?
Air Methods Anti-drug Training Manual pg 9
The employee is prohibited from consuming alcohol within 8 hrs following and accident/incident or prior to conducting a post accident test, whichever comes first.
Give 3 examples of personnel whom the provisions of Part 135 are applicable.
FAR 135.1
- The commuter or on-demand operations of each person who holds or is required to hold an Air Carrier Certificate or Operating Certificate
- Each person employed or used by a certificate holder conducting operations under this part
- Each person who applies for provisional approval of an Advanced Qualification Program curriculum, curriculum segment, or portion of a curriculum segment and each person employed or used by an air carrier or commercial operator under this part to perform training, qualification, or evaluation functions
- Nonstop Commercial Air Tour flights conducted for compensation or hire
- Each person who is on board an aircraft being operated under this part.
- Helicopter air ambulance operations as defined in § 135.601(b)(1).
Are PIC responsibilities (pertaining to aircraft airworthiness) required to be covered in the GOM?
FAR 135.23 Manual Content
Yes.
- (e) Procedures for ensuring that the PIC knows that req airworthiness inspecs have been made & that the aircraft has been approved for return to service in compliance with applicable mx reqs
GOM 1.5.14 PIC
- Accomplishes and properly docs pre-flight insp and inspects mx docs, to include status sheet, upon arrival for duty to determine the airworthiness of the aircraft…
Is AMC allowed to carry any narcs, marijuana, or depressants/stimulants on board any aircraft (other than those req for patient care by med crew)?
FAR 135.41
No. It would violate regs.
- If the holder of a cert operating under this part allows any aircraft owned or leased by that holder to be engaged in any op that the cert holder knows to be in violation of § 91.19(a) of this chap, that op is a basis for suspending or revoking the cert.
In flight, you encounter a potentially haz wx condition or irregularity w/ ground facility that you consider essential to safety of flight. What is your responsibility?
§ 135.67
Whenever a pilot encounters a potentially haz wx condition or an irregularity in a ground facility or nav aid in flight, the knowledge of which the pilot considers essential to the safety of other flights, the pilot shall notify an appropriate ground radio station as soon as practicable.
When an unsafe condition exists at the destination, with no acceptable alt but to continue to the destination, is this a normal op or an emerg situation?
§ 135.69
(a) If a PIC knows of conditions, including airport/runway conditions, that are a haz to safe ops, the PIC shall restrict or suspend ops until those conditions are corrected.
(b) No PIC may allow a flight to continue toward any airport of intended landing, under (a) of this section, unless, in the opinion of the PIC, the conditions that are a haz to safe ops may reasonably be expected to be corrected by the ETA or, unless there is no safer procedure. In the latter event, the continuation toward that airport is an emerg situation under 135.19.
§ 135.19
(a) In an emerg involving the safety of persons or prop, the cert holder may deviate from the rules of this part relating to aircraft and equip and wx minimums to the extent required to meet that emerg.
(b) In an emerg involving the safety of persons or prop, the PIC may deviate from the rules of this part to the extent required to meet that emerg.
By reg, what creds must an FAA inspector present to the PIC to gain access to the pilot compartment of the aircraft?
FAR 135.75
(a) Whenever, in performing the duties of conducting an inspection, an FAA inspector presents an Aviation Safety Inspector credential, FAA Form 110A, to the PIC, the inspector must be given free and uninterrupted access to the pilot compartment of that aircraft.
However, this does not limit the emerg authority of the PIC to exclude any person from the pilot compartment in the interest of safety.
What current materials are Air Methods req to provide to the PIC?
§ 135.83
- A cockpit checklist.
- For multi with retrac gear, emerg checklist
- Pertinent aeronautical charts.
- For IFR ops, each pertinent nav en route, terminal area, approach and letdown chart.
- For multi, one-engine-inop climb perf data
Min altitudes for AP use in a rotorcraft?
§ 135.93
(g) This section does not apply to ops conducted in rotorcraft.
