Aircraft Systems Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the fixed tail wing surface of an airplane?
Stabilizer (vertical or horizontal)
What is a servo tab?
Tab that moves opposite the control surface to relieve stick pressure
What is an anti servo tab?
Moves with a stabilator to dampen control pressure
Where is the aero tow cable connected?
On the nose
Where is a ground launch cable attached?
On the center of gravity tow hook
Name for back wheel
Breakaway wheel
What is a P-lead wire?
A grounding wire to short the spark plug when ignition is off.
What is the effect of a broken P-lead?
The engine can continue to run, or can start up when moving the propeller.
What is a rotax engine?
An engine that uses an engine-driven generator.
What are the two types of fuel induction?
Carburetor and fuel injection
In what conditions is carburetor icing possible?
Between 20 to 70 degrees fahrenheit and high humidity or moisture.
What is the first sign of carburetor icing?
A loss in power, as if the throttle were closed.
What should you look for when you apply carburetor heat?
A momentary loss of RPM and roughness, then a rise in RPM.
During what phases of flight should carburetor heat be used?
Any time the power is less than cruising flight.
What should be done to fix engine detonation?
Cool the engine, either by enriching mixture, lowering power settings, or increasing airspeed.
What is the sign of icing on a fuel injected engine?
Reduction in manifold pressure (RPMs are constant on a constant speed prop)
How does a throttle work?
It restricts airflow, making the cylinders work harder to intake fuel/air mixture and slowing down.
How to convert from C to F?
Multiply by 2 and add 30 to approximate.
How do you avoid arcing from static electricity while fueling?
Always connect a ground wire. Never add fuel from a plastic container.
What is an EGT?
Exhaust gas temperature gauge used for achieving ideal mixture
How to convert from F to C?
Subtract 30 and divide by 2 to approximate.
How to purge water from a fuel system with sumps and a fuel strainer?
Fuel strainer drain and fuel tank sumps.
What change occurs to mixture when you apply carburetor heat?
The mixture is more rich (due to lower density air)
How do carburetor engines take fuel in?
Pressure differential at the Venturi.
