all cells arise from other cells Flashcards
(7 cards)
what does mitosis produce?
mitosis produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells/diploid cells
what happens in interphase?
replication of DNA
replication of organelles
1st step of mitosis
prophase
chromosomes condense and become visible as two chromatids joined by a centromere- because DNA has replicated
nuclear envelope breaks down
mitotic spindle forms
2nd step of mitosis
metaphase
chromosomes line up on the equator of the cell
mitotic spindle attached to centromere
3rd step of mitosis
anaphase
sister chromatids pulled to opposite ends of the cell by spindle fibres by the centromere
4th step
Telophase
mitotic spindle disappears
nuclear envelope reforms and chromosomes uncondensed
cytokinesis occurs
how is cancer caused?
mutation causes uncontrolled cell division leading to cancer (oncogenes etc)
