What are the noble grapes of Alsace?
Muscat, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris;
Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir also grown.
What do the terms Vendanges Tardives and Selection de Grains Nobles mean?
VT = Late Harvest, many undergo passerillage, may have noble rot
SGN = must have a minimum level of ripeness, higher than that of VT, usually achieved through noble rot.
What is Edelzwicker or Gentil?
Inexpensive, blended wine not selected for varietal wines.
What are some ways in which winemakers in Alsace preserve the aromatics of their grape varieties?
Fermentation in large, very old oak barrels, no MLC, bottling in Spring while wine is young and fresh
