Ronald Reagan won the presidency in 1980 at a time when many Americans felt a deep discontent over the state of America’s economy, society, and politics.
Economy, which had enjoyed its greatest and longest period of sustained prosperity, began to decline from 1972. -Real wages stopped climbing, corporate profits and stock values tanked, and unemployment and inflation soared.
Vietnam War finally ended in 1975 with the defeat of the USA and South Vietnam. 15 years of conflict and more than 57,000 American lives lost for nothing.
Ronald Reagan preached a hopeful doctrine of conservative populism and introduced a period of conservative domination of American politics and society that would last for a generation.

Reagan was known as ‘the Great Communicator’ and always had the ability to sound sincere, making good use of his previous career as an actor. His public image of an affable fool was only an image because in reality he was an excellent speech writer, a thinker, a writer and an intelligent politician with a superb memory.
He had an instinct for mass leadership and a gift for politics. He had the personal charisma to gain widespread popular support.
Unlike Jimmy Carter, the Reagans wanted to bring glamour to the Whitehouse with Nancy Reagan wearing a $10,000 dress to the inaugural ball in 1981.

On March 30th 1981 (only 10 weeks into his Presidency), a mentally ill man John Hinckley Jr shot President Reagan outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC and seriously wounded three others to impress the actress Jodie Foster. The bullet missed Reagan’s heart by less than an inch. Following this, he gained widespread popular support for his bravery winning an approval rating of 73%.

The president of the United States did not so much as publicly utter the name of the disease until September 1985. Even then, it was only because a reporter brought it up at a news conference. Not until the spring of 1987 did Reagan give a major speech about AIDS.
By that time, the disease had already struck 36,058 Americans, of whom 20,849 had died.
The Reagan administration’s unwillingness to recognize and confront the AIDS epidemic has gone down in history as one of the deepest and most enduring scars on its legacy.

the reduction of big government was a stripping away of the interventions made by successive liberal governments since roosevelt. it was a return to laissez faire
they were both hard line and anti union. in august 1981, 13k air traffic controllers went on strike. reagan said their strike was illegal and threatened to fire the strikers if they did not return to work within 48 hours. they didnt, he sacked them all and banned them from working for government again.
both allowed for the creation of big business corporations which could monopolise areas of the industry.

Cut federal deficit - Cut public spending. The budget deficit aimed to reduce the federal deficit from 22% of the GNP in 1981 to 19% in 1986
Tax cuts - encourage companies to hire workers and encourage workers to spend money and boost the economy. Economic recovery tax act 1981
Deregulation and reduction in big government - removing federal government control in industry, state and local government, encourage businesses to grow = more employment = more competition
Control of money supply - keep inflation no down while expanding the economy.
Laffer curve and republican attitudes
Bush and his boys called it voodoo economics and disregarded it
On the other hand, Reagan and his supporters argued that economic problems were caused by government intrusion and excessive taxes

Republican majority in senate and alimony a republican majority in House of Representatives.
White house only had to win support of 26 democrats to pass legislation.
Omnibus reconciliation act of 1981 was passed in August. Budget cuts of $35B were introduced.
Economic recovery tax act 1981 was also passed in August.
The act cut personal income tax by 23% over three years.

Proposed a variety of tax cuts that will take $35Bn out of federal spending, the initial bill presented by the White House had proposed $45Bn worth of cuts.

Tightened tax rules, expecially for businesses.
Reversed some of the 81 tax concessions to businesses
Increased tax on cigarettes, airlines and telephone service.
Reduced number of tax brackets.

In 1982 the government deficit nearly doubled to over $110.6 billion and total national debt was above $1T.
USA suffered severe Recession
Unemployment rates went from 7.1% in 1980 to 9.6% in 1983.
Inflation which had been 11.3% in 1979 rose to 13.5% in 1980 but fell in 1982 to 6.2%.
Tax reform act 1986
Lowered top tax rate from 50% to 28% and raised the bottom tax rate from 11% to 15%. An additional 6 million of the poorest Americans now did not have to pay any tax.
Job increase from 83-89
18m new jobs. But many part time, low paid, low skilled jobs such as Walmart.

Large cuts of $35B in domestic, welfare programmes and increased defence spending significantly. Reagan hoped to cut federal spending in over 300 programmes.

Reagan saw deregulation as a key tool in reducing big government.
In 1982 he claimed he was already winning. He said this because:
Cut federal regulations almost in half removing 23k pages from federal register
Helped bring down cost of petrol and heating fuel by deregulation.
Created a federal strike force to combat government fraud and waste that had saved 2Billion in 6 months.
Replaced federal agencies with private sector ones and federal employees with volunteers.
