Analysis of movement through technology Flashcards
(9 cards)
Limb kinematics
Limb kinematics is the study of a movement of a limb in relation to space and time
-It uses body markers and multiple cameras from different angles to map the movement
-Specialist computer software then uses the camera footage to create a 3D image of the movement
Positives of limb kinematics
-Data is accurate and valid for analysis
-Gives good detail about technique
-Can be used to analyse the technique of a specific limb
Negatives of limb kinematics
-Specialist technology is expensive
-Does not take into account psychological and physiological makeup
-Accuracy is dependent on marker placement
Force plates
-Force plates are metal plates that are sunken into the ground and electrically connected to a computer, any contact with an object or limb generates an electrical output which is then converted into graphs on the computer
-The computer shows the size, time, and direction of forces
-This allows for the measurement of reaction forces
Advantages of force plates
-Data is immediate and accurate
-Useful for gait analysis of a performer
Disadvantages of force plates
-Specialist equipment is expensive
-lab based
-Performers may need to adjust their movement to increase accuracy
Wind tunnels
-Wind tunnels are channels that allow for the assessment of air flow over and around a performer of piece of equipment
-This is used to identify where air resistance can be reduced
-Finding where air resistance can be reduced can allow us to increase the streamlining of the body
Wind tunnels advantages
-Have been used to develop the drag reduction system in F1
-Scientists can manipulate/ replicate envronmental factors found outside e.g wind speed and direction
-Air resistance can be reduced wherever possible
Wind tunnels disadvantage
-Specialised equipment is expensive and lab-based
-analysis process is complex to understand and utilise
