Aorta
The vessel responsible for carrying oxygenated blood away from the heart; the largest artery in the circulatory system.
Artery
Any cardiovascular vessel flowing away from the heart.
Atrium
The upper chamber of the that receives blood from outside circulation and then pumps the blood into the ventricles. (plural is atria)
Vein
Any cardiovascular vessel flowing toward the heart.
Base
The top of the heart.
Cardiac Root/Base
The top of the heart, where blood vessels enter and exit the heart.
Apex
The bottom (pointed) tip of the heart and the location of the thickest part of the heart muscle.
Myocardium
Muscle of the heart.
Intercostal
The compartments (spaces) between the rib bones.
Thorax
The region of the body commonly called the chest, marked by the clavicles (collar bone) down to the diaphragm.
Mediastinum
The central compartment within the thorax that contains the heart and connecting blood vessels.
Midaxillary
A theoretical line that runs through the axillary region and separates the anterior (front) from the posterior (back) of the body.
Midclavical
A theoretical line that runs through vertically on the anterior (front) of the body in line with the clavicle.
Ventricle
The lower chambers of the heart, responsible for the distribution of blood to the lungs (right ventricle) and body (left ventricle) using strong muscular contractions.
