EKG-Specfic Terms Flashcards
(9 cards)
Einthoven’s Triangle
The original model for interpreting EKGs, made up of 3 original limb leads.
Artifact
Physical, Electrical, or Magnetic interference that alters the EKG tracing.
Baseline
An electrically neutral tracing on an EKG (flatline)
Depolarization
The loss of polarization as result of sodium influx into the muscle cells that leads to contraction of the muscle.
Repolarization
The re-establishment of polarization as a rustle of the moment of sodium out of the cell and potassium influx to replace it. Repolarization resets the cell so that it may contact again when need.
Electrocardiograph
A graphic representation of the movement of electricity with the heart.
Electrode
The interface between patient and machine, usually a conductive media fixed to the skin with a conductive water-based adhesive.
Leads
Wires from the machine that connect to the electrodes designed to measure the electrical impulses of the patient.
Leads are dived into two categories:
• Limb leads: 4bipolar leads that connect to the limbs and view electrical activity in the front of the heart.
• Precordical leads: 6unipolar leads that are placed on the chest from front right and wrapping to the left side of the patients chest.
PQRST-Waves/ Cardiac Cycle
The five standard waves of an EKG tracing, each wave is associated to a different electrical event within the heart.
