Anatomy final 5/15/13 Flashcards
(64 cards)
Hypothesis
a falsifiable and testable question
Theory
supported by lots of evidence
Evolution
change in genetic composition of a species over time
THEORY
Natural Selection is its mechanism for change
Homeostasis
The bodies ability to detect change and maintain stable internal conditions
Positive Feedback
leads to a greater change in the same direction
Negative Feedback
Bringing the body back to normal
Tissue
a collection of cells with a similar function
4 main categories of tissue
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
Epithelial Tissue
found in: skin
function: protect, secrete, absorb
Look: tightly packed cells no ECM
Connective Tissue
found in: joints, organs, under the skin
function: bind, support
look: lots of ECM, lots of fibers
Muscular Tissue
found in: skeletal, cardiac, smooth
function: movement
look: striations, longs almost fibrous cells
Nervous Tissue
found in: brain, spinal cord
function: communication
look: lots of extentions
How do bones elongate?
cartilage/chondrocytes in the epiphyseal plate go through hypertrophy and hyperplasia
Calcium Deposition
Ca deposited into the bone tissue
Calcium Resorption
Dissolving of the bone to release Ca into the blood
Calcitriol
raises blood Ca levels
PTH
raises blood Ca levels
Calcitonen
lowers blood Ca levels
Sensory Receptor
a structure specialized for detecting stimuli
Transduction
convert stimulus to a nerve signal
Modality
the type of stimulus; labeled line code
Locatoin
where stimulus comes from; receptor field
intensity
How strong
a) threshold
b) firing frequency
c) how many neurons are firing
Duration
How long the stimulus lasts, phasic and tonic
