Anatomy of the heart Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is the size of the heart?
~12×8×6 cm, ~250–350g
What is the primary function of the heart?
Pumps oxygenated & deoxygenated blood
Where is the heart located?
In the mediastinum, slightly left of midline
What are the three layers of the heart wall?
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
What does the myocardium do?
Thick muscle layer – pumps blood
What is the function of the endocardium?
Smooth inner lining – prevents clots
What are the components of the pericardium?
- Fibrous pericardium
- Serous pericardium (parietal and visceral)
What is the function of the right atrium?
Receives deoxygenated blood from body (via SVC, IVC)
What is the role of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood to body (via aorta)
Which valve is located between the right atrium and right ventricle?
Tricuspid (AV) valve
What is the function of the SA Node?
Natural pacemaker; initiates heartbeat (60–100 bpm)
What does the AV Node do?
Delays impulse (0.1 sec) to allow atrial contraction
Fill in the blank: The _______ carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
pulmonary artery
What is the pathway of pulmonary circulation?
Right ventricle → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary veins → left atrium
What is the function of the left coronary artery (LCA)?
- Left anterior descending (LAD)
- Circumflex artery
- Left marginal artery
What are the two main circulatory pathways?
- Pulmonary Circulation
- Systemic Circulation
Which structure transmits impulses to the ventricles?
Bundle of His
What does the term ‘Lub’ refer to in heart sounds?
AV valves close
What is the purpose of the coronary sinus?
All venous drainage from the heart drains into it
What branches does the aortic arch give rise to?
- Brachiocephalic trunk
- Left common carotid
- Left subclavian
What does the sympathetic nerve supply do to heart rate?
Increases HR & force
What is the significance of the pericardial cavity?
Contains fluid to reduce friction
What is the function of the Purkinje fibers?
Stimulate ventricular contraction
What is the role of the left atrium?
Receives oxygenated blood from lungs (via pulmonary veins)
