Anatomy Week 5 - Anatomy of the pelvis Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is the difference between the male and female pelvis?
A
- Males have a wider pelvis
- Oval shaped pelvic inlet
- 90 - 100 angle on the pubic arch
- Females have a narrower pelvis
- Heart shaped pelvic inlet
- 60 - 70 angle on the pubic arch.
2
Q
What are the three bones that the Pelvis consists of and what type of cartilage is involved?
A
- Ischium
- Ilium
- Pubis
Triradiate cartilage separates the bones prior to puberty-fusion begins at age 15-17 years.
3
Q
Describe the bony landmarks of the Ilium.
A
It is the largest and widest pelvic bone.
- Superior margin is the iliac crest
- Forms the Anterior Superior Iliac
Spine (ASIS)
- Posterior aspect is the Greater sciatic notch
4
Q
Describe the bony landmarks of the pubis.
A
- Most anterior portion of the hip bone.
- Body
- Located medially, it articulates with the opposite pubic body at the pubic symphysis.
- Superior ramus
- Extends laterally from the body to form part of
the acetabulum. - Inferior pubic ramus
- Projects towards the ischium.
5
Q
Describe the bony landmarks of the ischium.
A
- Forms the posteroinferior part of the hip bone.
- Ischial tuberosity
- The posteroinferior aspect of the Ischium.
- Ischial spine
- A posteromedial projection of bone near the junction of the superior ramus and the Ischium body.
- Inferior ischial ramus combines with the inferior pubic ramus forming the ischiopubic ramus.
