What is the difference between the male and female pelvis?

A
  • Males have a wider pelvis
  • Oval shaped pelvic inlet
  • 90 - 100 angle on the pubic arch
  • Females have a narrower pelvis
  • Heart shaped pelvic inlet
  • 60 - 70 angle on the pubic arch.

What are the three bones that the Pelvis consists of and what type of cartilage is involved?

  1. Ischium
  2. Ilium
  3. Pubis

Triradiate cartilage separates the bones prior to puberty-fusion begins at age 15-17 years.

Describe the bony landmarks of the Ilium.

A

It is the largest and widest pelvic bone.
- Superior margin is the iliac crest
- Forms the Anterior Superior Iliac
Spine (ASIS)
- Posterior aspect is the Greater sciatic notch

Describe the bony landmarks of the pubis.

A
  • Most anterior portion of the hip bone.
  • Body
  • Located medially, it articulates with the opposite pubic body at the pubic symphysis.
  • Superior ramus
  • Extends laterally from the body to form part of
    the acetabulum.
  • Inferior pubic ramus
  • Projects towards the ischium.

Describe the bony landmarks of the ischium.

A
  • Forms the posteroinferior part of the hip bone.
  • Ischial tuberosity
  • The posteroinferior aspect of the Ischium.
  • Ischial spine
  • A posteromedial projection of bone near the junction of the superior ramus and the Ischium body.
  • Inferior ischial ramus combines with the inferior pubic ramus forming the ischiopubic ramus.
