Animal Nutrition Flashcards
(7 cards)
Purpose of Nutrition? (2)
Development + survival.
–> Growth & repair
(new cells, maintaining tissue, repairing injury)
–> energy (ATP)
(need energy to perform vital functions - breathing/ moving)
What is food? Organic/Inorganic?
Organic: (animal + plant origin)
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats
–> provides calories (E/ATP)
–> provides building blocks build/replace ^^ in each cell
Inorganic: DNA, Vitamins, Minerals
–> no calories (no E)
–> co-factors to building blocks
Amino Acids, main facts (3)
Proteins made of amino acids
9 Essential to humans
–> must gain through diet, released during digestion
CANNOT BE STORED
Carbohydrates main facts
All carbs are made of sugars.
–> provide most E (ATP) for the body
Simple carbs (sugars) easy to absorb.
Complex carbs (starches harder to digest, fibers indigestible)
CAN BE STORED
Excess glucose –> Glycogen (liver, kidney, muscles)
Fatty Acids main facts
Essential nutrients:
–> used for energy storage
–> aid absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
1) Saturated fats (solid dairy)
2) Mono unsaturated fats (liquids/oil)
3) Poly unsaturated fats (essential for brain/heart health (omega 3 fatty acid))
4) Trans fats (artificially creates via rehydration, margarine)
White vs Brown Fat
White fat (fat-filled cells adipocytes - connective tissue)
–> commonly used energy storage, 1 droplet/cell slow access
Brown adipose tissue (heat production)
–> non-shivering thermogenesis, multiple lipid droplets/organelle fast access
Vitamins
13 essential (humans)
1) Lipo (Fat) soluble (stored in fatty tissue & liver)
2) Water soluble (not stored, need to be consumed regularly - Vit C)
