Animal Organisation - Gaseous Exchange Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the respiratory system?
The body system that takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.
What are the main organs of the respiratory system?
Lungs, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and diaphragm.
What is the function of the lungs?
To exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and blood.
What is the trachea?
The windpipe that carries air from the nose and mouth to the lungs.
What are the bronchi?
The two main tubes that branch from the trachea into each lung.
What are bronchioles?
Smaller tubes that branch from the bronchi inside the lungs.
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange happens.
What is the diaphragm?
A large muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing.
How does oxygen get into the body?
It enters through the nose or mouth, travels down the trachea, and reaches the alveoli in the lungs.
What happens to oxygen in the alveoli?
It passes into the blood and is carried around the body.
What happens to carbon dioxide in the body?
It is carried by blood to the lungs and breathed out through the nose or mouth.
Why do we need to breathe?
To get oxygen for our cells and to remove waste carbon dioxide.
What happens when we breathe in?
The diaphragm contracts, the chest expands, and air enters the lungs.
What happens when we breathe out?
The diaphragm relaxes, the chest gets smaller, and air leaves the lungs.
How does smoking damage the respiratory system?
It damages the lungs and makes it harder to breathe and get oxygen.
What is asthma?
A condition where the airways become narrow and make breathing difficult.
Why is exercise good for the respiratory system?
It makes the breathing muscles stronger and improves lung capacity.
What gas do we breathe in from the air?
Oxygen.
What waste gas do we breathe out?
Carbon dioxide.
How are the alveoli adapted for gas exchange?
They have very thin walls and a large surface area.
What protects the lungs?
The ribcage.
Why do we breathe faster during exercise?
Because our muscles need more oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide.
What happens if we don’t get enough oxygen?
Our cells cannot work properly and we feel tired or unwell.
How does the respiratory system work with the circulatory system?
The lungs add oxygen to blood and remove carbon dioxide from blood.
