Animal Organisation - Transport Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the circulatory system?
The body system that transports blood around the body.
What are the main parts of the circulatory system?
Heart, blood vessels, and blood.
What is the function of the heart?
To pump blood around the body.
What is the function of blood?
To carry oxygen, nutrients, and waste products around the body.
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins, and capillaries.
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart.
What do veins do?
Carry blood back to the heart.
What do capillaries do?
Allow exchange of substances between blood and body cells.
How many chambers does the human heart have?
Four chambers - two atria and two ventricles.
What makes the heart beat?
The heart muscle contracting and relaxing.
What is blood pressure?
The force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels.
What is the pulse?
The beating you can feel as blood is pumped through arteries.
What are red blood cells for?
To carry oxygen around the body.
What are white blood cells for?
To fight infection and disease.
What are platelets for?
To help blood clot when you are injured.
What is plasma?
The liquid part of blood that carries dissolved substances.
Why do we need oxygen in our blood?
Cells need oxygen to release energy from food.
What waste product does blood carry away from cells?
Carbon dioxide.
How does exercise affect the circulatory system?
Makes the heart stronger and improves blood flow.
What can damage the circulatory system?
Smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and high blood pressure.
Why is a healthy diet important for the circulatory system?
It helps prevent heart disease and keeps blood vessels healthy.
What happens if the heart stops working?
Blood cannot circulate and cells do not get oxygen and nutrients.
How does the circulatory system work with the respiratory system?
Blood picks up oxygen from the lungs and delivers it to body cells.
How does the circulatory system work with the digestive system?
Blood picks up nutrients from the intestines and delivers them to body cells.
