Circulatory System and Blood Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport substances around the body including oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
What are the main components of the circulatory system?
Heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and blood.
What type of circulatory system do humans have?
A double circulatory system.
What is a double circulatory system?
Blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit - once to the lungs and once to the body.
What are the two circuits in the double circulation?
Pulmonary circulation (heart to lungs) and systemic circulation (heart to body).
How many chambers does the human heart have?
Four chambers - two atria and two ventricles.
What are the upper chambers of the heart called?
Atria (singular: atrium).
What are the lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles.
Which side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood?
The right side.
Which side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood?
The left side.
What prevents blood flowing backwards in the heart?
Heart valves.
What is systole?
When the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood out.
What is diastole?
When the heart muscle relaxes and fills with blood.
What is blood pressure?
The pressure of blood against the walls of blood vessels.
What are arteries?
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
What are veins?
Blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart.
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels where exchange of substances occurs.
How are arteries adapted for their function?
Thick muscular walls, elastic fibres, small lumen, high pressure.
How are veins adapted for their function?
Thin walls, valves to prevent backflow, large lumen, low pressure.
How are capillaries adapted for their function?
One cell thick walls for easy diffusion, very small diameter, large surface area.
What is the largest artery in the body?
The aorta.
What are the coronary arteries?
Arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood.
What is the composition of blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
What is plasma?
The liquid part of blood, mainly water with dissolved substances.
