ANS Flashcards
Is the somatic NS motor or somatic?
Both
What part of the brain is responsible for most of the control of the ANS?
Hypothalamus
Where is the reflex center for the ANS?
Medulla oblongata
What are the reflexes in the medulla oblongata?
Coughing, vomiting, breathing and HR
Where is the sympathetic NS?
T1-L2
What nerves contribute to the p/s NS?
CN III, VII, IX, X and S2-4
What effect does the p/s have on sweat glands and peripheral blood vessels?
None
From where does the sympathetic chain extend?
Cervical to coccygeal levels
What are the three locations in the body that correspond to the three different pathways for sympathetic nerves?
Periphery, viscera superior to the diaphragm, viscera inferior to the diaphragm
Sympathetic path to the periphery
Enter chain, synapse, leave via same level ramus comunicante to reenter the spinal nerve
Sympathetic path to viscera above the diaphragm
Enter chain, go up or down, synapse in ganglion, leave the chain as cardiac, pulmonary or esophageal branches
Sympathetic path to viscera below the diaphragm
Enter chain, exit chain as splanchnic nerves, synapse at the collateral ganglia on the aorta near the celiac trunk and superior and inferior mesenteric arteries.
Why does the phenomenon of referred pain occur?
visceral and somatic sensory nerves enter the spinal cord at the same level, so visceral pain may radiate along somatic pathways
