antagonistic pairs Flashcards
relationship between the muscoskeletal system and joint movement in the creation of movement (19 cards)
agonist
- contracts to cause movement, prime mover, muscle responsible for movement.
eg- when you perform a bicep curl, the bicep will be the agonist as it contracts to produce movement
example
bicep- tricep
hamstring- quadricep
gluteas maximus- hip flexors
gastrocnemius- tibilas anterior
pectorals- latissimus dorsi
antagonist
lengthens to allow movement to occur, the muscle that relaxes or lengthens to allow movement to occur
eg- when you perform a bicep curl, the tricep is the antagonist because it relaxes for movement
origin
the attachment to the bone that does not move when a muscle contracts
attachment point at the proximal end- closer to medial
insertion
attached to the bone which moves more when the muscle contracts, distal end of the body, further from midline, the end of the muscle tat gets pulled or moved when the muscle tightens
