Anterior/Medial Thigh + Femoral Triangle Flashcards
(45 cards)
how many muscles are there in the anterior thigh?
8:
two make up iliopsoas
4 make up quadriceps femoris
plus sartorius + gracilis
which nerve innervates the anterior compartment?
femoral (L2-L4)
what is the general function of the anterior compartment?
extensors of knee
which 2 muscles make up iliopsoas?
iliacus and psoas major
what is the function of iliopsoas?
major hip flexor
also assists in lateral rotation
what are the attachments of the iliopsoas muscle?
psoas major comes from lumbar vertebrae, iliacus from the iliac fossa
both attach to lesser trochanter of femur
what is the innervation of iliopsoas?
psoas major = anterior rami of L1-L3
iliac = femoral nerve
name the muscles of quadriceps femoris
3 vastus muscles (medialis, intermedius + lateralis) and the rectus femoris
how does the quadriceps insert?
attaches to patella via quadriceps tendon, patella attaches to tibia by patellar tendon
what is the action of the vastus muscles?
extend knee
what is the innervation of quadriceps femoris?
anterior compartment, so femoral nerve
what are the attachments of rectus femoris?
ilium to patella by quadriceps tendon
which quadriceps muscle crosses both knee and hip joints?
rectus femoris
what is the action of rectus femoris?
flexes at knee, extends at hip
what are the attachments of the sartorius?
ASIS to superior medial surface of tibia
what is the action of sartorius?
at hip = flexor, abductor + lateral rotator
at knee = flexor
(sitting cross-legged on floor)
what is the action of pectineus?
adduction and flexion at hip
why can pectineus be considered either anterior or medial?
innervation of anterior (femoral)
action of medial (adduction and flexion at hip)
what are the attachments of pectineus?
pectineal line of pelvis to pectineal line on posterior femur
what is the general action of the medial thigh compartment?
hip adduction
which nerve innervates the medial thigh muscles?
obturator
how many muscles are there in the medial thigh?
5
name the 5 muscles in the medial thigh
adductor magnus, longus and brevis
obturator externus
gracilis
what roots does the obturator nerve arise from?
L2-L4
