Describe the anterior mediastinum

A

Little more than a potential space, continuous with the superior mediastinum

A

The thymus

Describe the thymus

A

A bilobed organ, more prominent in children

What are the anterior relationships of the thymus?

A

the pre-tracheal fascia, sternohyoid, manubrium, and upper part of the body of the sternum

What overlaps the lobes of the thymus?

A

Slightly overlapped by the pleura

What is the lymphatic drainage of the thymus?

A

To parasternal, tracheobronchial and brachiocephalic nodes

What is the blood supply of the thymus?

A

The inferior thyroid artery and the internal thoracic artery

What is the nerve supply to the thymus?

A

By vascular sympathetic fibres.

What does the thymus develop from ?

A

From the endoderm of the ventral part of the third and ?fourth branchial pouches with ectoderm from the associated clefts.
