Origin of Man

A
  • Gen. 1:27 And God created man in His own image…
  • Gen. 2:7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
  • Acts 17:26 and He made from one, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth…

Sudden Creationism
Definition
Creation was a recent event of 7,000 to 20,000 years ago, and the days of Genesis 1 were approximately 24 hours in length

Support
Scripture
* Ex. 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh. (Context emphasizes a normal work week).
* Heb. 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

“Day” (Yom)
* Gen. 8 The 150 days of the flood.
* Ex. 24:18 The 40 days Moses was on Sinai
* Num. 13:25 The 40 days the spies searched out Canaan
* Jonah 1:17 The 3 days Jonah was inside the great fish.
*Always refers to a 24 hour duration when used with a numerical adjective.

“Morning and evening”
* Occurs over 100 X in the OT and always has a 24 hour connotation.
* It relates more naturally to a 24 hour framework.

Fossils and Rock Strata
The catastrophic flood can correlate the fossil evidence with a literal interpretation of Genesis.

Apparent Age
God could have created the earth with a superficial appearance of age or history.

Death
According to the day-age theorists, death would have to enter into the world before sin in Gen. 3.

Q

Nature of Man (Material)

A

Material and immaterial at the same time.
* Gen. 2:7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Material
The visible extension of man’s being into space.
* Rom. 12:1 I urge you therefore brethren… to present your bodies…
* I Cor. 15:44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
* Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live…

Q

Nature of Man (Immaterial)

A

The Source of Man’s Immaterial Being

Pre-Existence
Theory
The immaterial aspect of man reincarnates from one form of creature life to another.

Con
Heb. 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.

Traducianism
Theory
* Parents are responsible for the transition of both material and immaterial aspect through the normal propagation process.
* The issue is transition, not origin of the soul; parents do not create the soul.
* Jesus Christ is an exception.
* At creation God created man one part-physical, and then passed on the immaterial through the breath of life.

Pro
* Best accounts for original sin and total depravity (Rom. 5:12)
* When God created Eve, He did not breathe into her the breath of life. Rather her immaterial being was somehow passed on in what He did through Adam.
* Morpho Genetics/atavism supports this. The immediate or sporadic appearance of corresponding mental or moral traits (immaterial) in children.

Con
* If Christ received his immaterial nature from Mary it would be marred by sin.
* The soul is indivisible and it is philosophically illogical to say that a new soul divides off of the immaterial being of the parents.

Creationism
Theory
* Each man’s soul is a separate and special creative act of God each time a new life is conceived.
* This soul is created when the child is in the womb.

Pro
* Scripturally the body comes from the earth and the Spirit from God.
* The soul is immaterial and therefore could not be transmitted from parents.
* Christ does not have to be an exception, because He was created a sinless being.

Con
* This theory tends to make God the indirect or direct author of evil.
* Gen. 2:2 seems to clearly indicate that God ceased from His creative work.
* Has difficulty dealing with the passing on of Adam’s sin (Rom. 5:12).

* Prov. 25:25 Like cold water to a weary soul, so is good news from a distant land.
* Ez. 18:4 The soul who sins will die.

Spirit
Life in action-that which should control the body.
* Ps. 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
* Matt 26:41 …the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Heart
Seat of emotions and interaction
