Q

Infallibility of Scripture

A

Some would say that the Scripture is only innerrant in matters of “faith and practice.” This is actually the same as Inerrancy and denotes the formal aspect of God’s authority as revealed in Scripture.

John 10:34-36 The Scripture cannot be broken
Isaiah 55:11 - God’s word does not return void

Old Testament
* Ezra may have played a pivotal role in collecting the OT Scriptures in the fifth century B.C.
* II Tim. 3:16 “Scripture” There was evidently a “canonized” collection of books called “Scripture.”
* Qumran-The Qumran community cites most of the OT books.
* The canon was closed by general common consent rather than by formal decree on the part of the rabbis.
* Council of Jamnia-Doubtful if such a council ever occurred; no formal pronouncement as to the limits of the canon was made.

New Testament
* The books of the NT were used in public worship by the first century church. I Thess. 4:27 …have this letter read to all the brethren…
* Apostolic fathers (90-120) quote most of the epistles as Scripture.
* The apologists (120-170) clearly recognized the canonical gospels as distinct from other spurios works.
* The Third council of Carthage (397 A.D.) recognized the presently accepted NT canon.
