anti-colonial and post-colonial nationalism Flashcards
(6 cards)
what are anti-colonial nationalists?
emerged during colonial rule and rebelled against it
what are post-colonial nationalists?
dominated the political agenda after receiving full political independence
3 possible paths after the power vacuum left when a country had been under colonial rule:
- marxism/socialism
- religion
- leadership cults
marxism/socialism:
-government controls the economy as a way of creating stability post-independence
- states were normally developing countries so needed economic development which would make external investment an attractive proposition
-socialism contributed to the destruction of local elites left behind by the days of colonial rule
-e.g. Nyerere (Tanzania) - achieve economic development through collectivisation of farms, also wanted to foster a sense of kinship and community
religion:
-mostly happened in islamic countries
-has led to the concept of the ‘islamic state’ in which nationalism is allied with islamic values and law
-idea that national identity couldn’t be achieved without the binding force of religion to underpin it
-example = Gaddafi in Libya
leadership cults:
-leadership cults = ruler seeks to create national identity by force
-e.g. Idi Amin in Uganda
