what are the 4 forms of expansionist nationalism:
- imperialism
- militarism
- chauvinism
- racial conquest
explain imperialism:
a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through colonisation, use of military force, or other means
what’s pan-nationalism?
a more extreme form of imperialism - the idea of uniting a people who are spread among different states, regardless of any distinctions e.g. Nasser’s pan-Arabism
what’s militarism?
-looking back on the character of a nation when it was militarily dominant and trying to militarily impose that on other people e.g. Milosevic invading kosovo to push out ethnic albanians
-aims = rekindle past glories of the nation to inspire the people and mobilise the people through armed forces and create a powerful sense of national unity
-current example = Putin now!
what’s chauvinism?
-an exaggerated form of patriotism
-idea that the characteristics of one nation are superior to all others
what’s racial conquest?
-racist nationalist belive their own race is superior to others which leads to a belief that the race is entitled to territory occupied by racial groups
-e.g. Nazisim
