Antibiotics Flashcards
(8 cards)
Which drugs are aminoglycosides?
T: Tobramycin
A: Amikacin
G: Gentamycin
How do aminoglycosides work?
Inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit
Toxic effects of aminoglycosides
nephrotoxic, ototoxic
Clinical application of aminoglycosides
Treat gram negative bacterial infections that are resistant to less toxic antibiotics
Vancomycin
Treatment of gram positive bacterial infections unresponsive to other antibiotics, interferes with ability of bacteria to form cell walls
Toxic effects of vancomycin
Nephrotoxicity, Ototoxicity, Red man syndrome
Chloramphenicol
Treatment of bacterial meningitis, concentrates in CSF. Inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by binding the 50S ribosomal subunit, bacterialstatic
Toxic effects of Chloramphenicol
Cardiovascular collapse (newborns), blood dyscrasias, anemia (maturation arrest)
