Anticoagulants Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is Heparin?
Heparin is an anticoagulant that works by activating antithrombin III, inactivating key clotting factors like Factor Xa and thrombin, slowing down clot formation.
What are the indications for Heparin?
Heparin is used for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism, acute coronary syndrome, during surgery, and in hemodialysis.
What are the contraindications for Heparin?
Contraindications include active bleeding, severe thrombocytopenia, hypersensitivity to heparin, history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, uncontrolled hypertension, and recent surgery involving the brain, spinal cord, or eyes.
What is the drug class of Heparin?
Heparin is classified as an anticoagulant and is pharmacologically categorized as unfractionated heparin.
What are the adverse effects of Heparin?
Adverse effects include bleeding, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, osteoporosis with long-term use, allergic reactions, elevated liver enzymes, and injection site reactions.
What client teaching is recommended for Heparin?
Patients should report unusual bleeding, avoid activities that increase bleeding risk, have regular blood tests, avoid alcohol and certain medications, and be aware of its pregnancy category C.
What is Clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix)?
Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug that inhibits the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing platelet aggregation and reducing clot formation.
What are the indications for Clopidogrel?
Clopidogrel is indicated for the prevention of atherosclerotic events, acute coronary syndrome, stent placement, and stroke prevention.
What are the contraindications for Clopidogrel?
Contraindications include active bleeding disorders, hypersensitivity to clopidogrel, severe liver disease, pregnancy category B, and recent surgery or trauma.
What is the drug class of Clopidogrel?
Clopidogrel is classified as an antiplatelet agent and is a P2Y12 inhibitor.
What are the adverse effects of Clopidogrel?
Adverse effects include bleeding, thrombocytopenia, gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, TTP, and elevated liver enzymes.
What client teaching is recommended for Clopidogrel?
Patients should monitor for signs of bleeding, notify healthcare providers before surgeries, avoid NSAIDs and aspirin unless prescribed, inform about missed doses, and exercise caution with alcohol.
