AP Bio Chapter 7 Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
Converts solar energy into chemical energy of a carbohydrate, used for structure or fuel.
What are autotrophs?
Organisms that produce their own food by converting inorganic to organic.
What are heterotrophs?
Consumers that take in preformed organic molecules as building blocks and energy sources.
What is the second product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen, which allows for aerobic respiration.
What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
Solar energy, water, and CO2.
How does water enter plants?
Through the roots.
How does CO2 enter plants?
Through stomatal openings in leaves.
What is the structure of chloroplasts?
Double membrane, stroma, thylakoid membranes, grana/granum.
What is the role of the stroma in chloroplasts?
Semifluid interior where CO2 is fixed into carbohydrates.
What is the function of thylakoid membranes?
Increased surface area for ATP/NADPH generation.
What is the lumen?
The inside of the thylakoid.
What is the role of stomata?
Open to let in carbon and release oxygen, close to prevent excessive evaporation.
What is the overall reaction of photosynthesis?
Solar Energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2.
What is the role of NADP/H in photosynthesis?
Carries atoms, reducing CO2 into glucose.
What happens in the light-dependent reaction?
Water is split, producing NADPH, ATP, and oxygen.
What is the Calvin Cycle?
Light-independent reaction that uses ATP and NADPH to reduce CO2 into glucose.
What are the types of pigments involved in photosynthesis?
- Chlorophyll a and b
- Carotenoids.
What is the absorption spectrum?
A graph showing percent of light absorbed at each wavelength by pigments.
What occurs during the noncyclic electron flow?
- Water is split
- Electrons are excited
- NADPH is formed.
What is chemiosmosis?
Process that generates ATP using an electrochemical gradient of hydrogen ions.
What are the steps of the Calvin Cycle?
- Fixation of CO2
- Reduction of CO2
- Regeneration of RuBP.
What is RuBP?
A five-carbon molecule that binds with CO2 in the Calvin Cycle.
What is photorespiration?
Inefficient process that occurs when O2 competes with CO2 for RuBP.
What are C4 plants?
Plants adapted to avoid photorespiration by spatial separation of reactions.
