Use numerals for 12 through 999

Hyphens
Use hyphens to combine numbers and the words hundred or thousand
Ex: Nearly two-thousand students attended the lecture
Ordinals
Use the same rules for ordinals
Larger ordinals
Use numerals and -st, -nd, -rd, or -th for larger numbers
Ex: 21st
A person’s name and age
Do NOT follow a person’s name with the age set off with commas
Cents
Always spell out cents
Spell out amounts less than 12
Ex: five cents, 25 cents
Dollars
Always spell out dollars, and never use the $ sign
Amounts of money less than 12
Use words for amounts less than 12
Ex. Five dollars
500-thousand dollars
Units
Use commas to separate units
Ex. Five dollars, ten cents
Large amounts of money
Round and use more than or less than
Ex. More than five million dollars
Elections/Voting
Use numbers sparingly
Use percentages rather than totals
Measurements
Spell out numbers less than 12
Use commas to separate units of measure
Ex. He is five feet, six inches tall
Measurement adjectives
Use hyphens
Ex. The five-foot-six man
Percentages/Scores
Spell out “percent” and numbers less than 12
Ex. Eleven percent
Use figures only with “to”
