Aphasia Exam 1 Aphasia overview Flashcards
(27 cards)
Ischemic stroke (most common stroke)
blood vessel in the brain gets partially blocked, reducing blood supply to that area.
Types of Ischemic stroke
Thrombus, Embolism, Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Thrombus
arteries become hard and narrow, making it hard for blood to flow. Can be caused by genes, smoking, high cholesterol, or not being active.
Transient Ischemic Attack
Mini-stroke with temporary stroke-like symptoms that disappear within 24 hours. A warning sign of a future stroke.
Embolism
blood clot or debris breaks off, travels through the bloodstream, blocks a smaller vessel, stopping blood flow
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Bleeding in the brain
Two types of Hemorrhagic Stroke
Subarachnoid & intracerebral
Subarachnoid Hemorrhagic stroke
a bleed between the surface of the cerebrum and the skull (meninges)
Intracerebral Hemorrhagic stroke
blood vessel in brain ruptures
2 types: Cerebral aneurysm, Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
Cerebral aneurysm
Weak blood vessel balloons out. Can burst.
Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
Twisted, tangled blood vessels.
Atherosclerosis
chronic disease that affects the arteries, causing them to become narrowed and hardened (thrombus stroke)
Infarction
blood flow to the heart muscle is completely blocked for an extended period.
What two main arteries supply blood to the brain
carotid and vertebral arteries
Carotid Arteries (arteries)
carry blood to the brain
Vertebral Arteries (veins)
carry blood away from the brain
Anterior Cerebral Artery (ACA)
supplies the medial (inner) surface of frontal and parietal lobes.
Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA)
supplies the entire lateral (outer) surface of the brain. Largest branch of internal carotid artery
Circle of Willis
Connects the ACA, MCA, and PCA arteries, allowing blood to flow from the opposite side if one side gets blocked
Neoplasm
Brain tumors are abnormal growths in the brain that can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Brain tumor (Primary tumors)
abnormal growth of brain tissue and meninges; can result from trauma or injury
Glioma
tumor composed of the glial tissue
Astrocytoma
slow-growing, non-cancerous (benign) tumor in the brain or spinal cord made of a type of brain cell called astrocytes.
Glioblastoma
fast-growing, cancerous (malignant) brain tumor that comes from glioblast cells.
