APII: Connective Tissue Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the types of Connective Tissue?
- Connective Tissue Proper / Fibrous C.T. Bend
- Cartilage
- Bone
- Blood
What is included in Connective Tissue Proper?
Tendons, ligaments, fascia, retinacula, aponeuroses, adipose
What are the main components of all connective tissues?
- Cells
- Extracellular protein fibers
- Ground Substance
What types of cells are found in connective tissue?
Different types of cells for different types of C.T.
What type of fibers are found in C.T. proper?
LOTS of fibers
What percentage of bone is collagen?
Approx. 30%
What happens to bone without fibers?
Brittle as chalk
What is gelatin made from?
Collagen from bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage
What type of proteins are found in blood?
Plasma proteins
What is the ground substance in C.T. Proper like?
Thick, viscous, gel-like fluid
What effect does hydration have on ground substance?
The more hydrated it is, the more liquid it becomes
What is the consistency of cartilage’s ground substance?
Solid gel
What is the consistency of bone’s ground substance?
Mineralized
What is the consistency of blood’s ground substance?
Plasma
What are the functions of connective tissue?
- Provide structural framework
- Transport substances from one region to another
- Protection for delicate organs
- Support, surround, and interconnect other tissue types
- Store energy reserves
- Defend body from invasion by microorganisms
What is cartilage?
Cartilage is avascular, meaning it has no blood supply, and nutrients must diffuse through the gel matrix. This is why it heals slowly.
What are chondrocytes?
Chondrocytes are the cells found in cartilage.
What are lacunae?
Lacunae are the spaces where chondrocytes are located.
What are the three types of cartilage?
- Hyaline cartilage - found at the ends of bones, nose, larynx, trachea, ribs.
- Fibrocartilage - found in intervertebral discs, pubis symphysis, sacroiliac joints.
- Elastic cartilage - found in ears and epiglottis.
What are fibroblasts?
Fibroblasts are cells that build fibers and produce proteins in the ground substance.
What are macrophages?
Macrophages are a type of white blood cell that act as phagocytes.
What are adipose cells?
Adipose cells are fat cells.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are partially undifferentiated cells that can turn into other types of connective tissue cells.
