What are the benefits for the host country (other countries) ?
- Foxconn in China assemble Iphones and Ipads.
- Cork important for global distribution, employ 6000 staff.
- Indirectly employ 2.5 million through Foxconn but they made move to India for cheaper labour.
Problems for the host country ?
- Jobs in Cork wot be for locals as they have to be multi-lingual to communicate globally.
- Apple had to pay $13 billion in unpaid tax for them being in Cork as in Cork they pay low tax.
- Half of the wages for working in Foxconn go back to living expenses for owner.
Benefits for the country of origin ?
- 90,000 employees in USA
- Using 100% renewable energy in USA
- HQ and research centre based in California
- 5 data centres in USA
Benefits for the TNC ?
- Worlds largest ICT company worth over $1 trillion.
- 137,000 full time employees
- 45% sales in USA
Problems for the TNC ?
- Third of employees dont work in the USA
- Apple have to pay import tax from China to USA.
- Foxconn workers poor working environments
- China can copy Apple products.
Where is majority of Apple suppliers ?
Asia - perhaps becoming over reliant
Explain worldwide relationships with Apple ?
-Over 500 retail stores in 22 countries(half in USA)
-Until 2023, most products made in China by Foxconn (Taiwanese company) employing 2.5 million globally
-Wifi and microchips supplied from over 20 different countries
-In 2023 Apple shifted production away from China and towards India
What are the environmental impacts of Apple.
-Greenpeace criticised apple in 2000’s, as a result they created a ‘green my apple’ campaign lead to :
-100% renewable energy in the USA and created apple energy from solar pannels
-Removed all PVC plastics and toxic chemicals from products
-Promotes recycling of its products (lack of repairability contradicts)
-Now ranked 2nd in Greenpeace’s ‘green electronics’ rankings
